At the annual Convention of the American Kite Flyers Association in Ocean Shores, Washington, 20 giant octopus kites flew all at one time, setting a new World Record. The revious record was 19 such kites aloft. Each kite weighs about 35 pounds and cost $4500.00.
The convention ran from Oct. 1- Oct. 7th. It featured competitions in dual and quad line sport kites, fighter kites, kite making, mass ascensions, workshops and seminars for participants. About 350 people attended all or part from almost every State and many foreign countries. Delegates came from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Guatemala, and more. Total members in the AKA are about 3600. Ask us about membership and the benefits, like discounts on kites at particpating kite stores.
We had an enjoyable time, especially at the annual great kite auction, where you can bid on one of kind kites and kite art. It was emceed by the ever funny David Gomberg, and raised money to benefit the organization. The seminars were very instructive. I went to the one on how to “fly Giant kites and not kill yourself or others.”
